The Quiet Binding
Project type
Porcelain Clay Glazed
Date
January 2026
Location
Liverpool
This sculpture explores ideas of spiritual transformation, growth, and the merging of the human body with the natural world. The seated figure is entwined with root-like forms and blooming organic structures that appear to grow across the surface of the body, blurring distinctions between flesh, plant life, and landscape. Influenced by themes found throughout my painting practice — erosion, gravity, decay, and seasonal transformation — the work reflects on the body as something constantly changing and shaped by external forces.
The process of sculpting became highly meditative, allowing the clay to guide intuitive decisions through touch and repetition. Rather than working toward complete control, I allowed forms to emerge gradually and organically, mirroring natural processes of growth and weathering. The layered glazes create surfaces that feel both delicate and unsettled, shifting between beauty and discomfort.
The upward posture of the figure suggests contemplation, surrender, or spiritual awakening. Entangled by vine-like structures yet appearing calm within them, the sculpture imagines nature not as separate from humanity, but as something deeply intertwined with identity, memory, and the passage of time.
